Maryville College Network Troubleshooting Tips for Students
Windows 98, Windows Millennium
Edition Support
1. Check to ensure that you have a Category 5 Network
Cable running from your PC to the Network Jack in the wall. Check
both ends of the connection to assure a snug fit. If you do not have
a proper cable, one may be purchased in the bookstore.
2. Look at the the back of your PC/Laptop where the Cat5
Network Cable plugs in. See if there is a network light, usually
colored green or yellow, indicating a good connection. If not,
please call the IT department at 8083 for more information.
3. Check to see if your computer is obtaining an IP
address. In Windows 98 and ME this is done by doing the following:
Go to Start-Run and type WINIPCFG
Make sure your Ethernet Adapter is listed in the drop
down box, and look at the column labeled "IP Address"
Your IP Address should read 172.16.X.XXX
If your IP does not begin with 172.16 or if
there is not one listed at all press the "Release All" button
and then the "Renew All" button. If an IP Address of 172.16.X.XXX
shows up, attempt to open a known-good webpage in your web browser
4. Check your PC/Laptop to make sure no other internet
applications(I.E. AOL, Prodigy) are running which might prevent Internet
Explorer/Netscape Navigator from working properly. These software(s)
may need to be de-activated or uninstalled for your network connection to
function properly.

Q: I do not have internet access in my room. My cable
connection is O.K., but when I try to release and renew my IP
according to the instructions found at http://support.maryvillecollege.edu/scots_troubleshooting.htm
get the error message "Operation Attempted on something
that isn't a socket". What do I do?
A: Most likely, you are the victim of spyware.
Certain pieces of spyware are very buggy, and when they are
removed, they can cause your internet connection to fail.
To find out more about what might have caused your problem,
go
here for more
information.
There are two available "freeware" files which can
attempt to fix this problem for you(make
sure to read the warnings under the "Info" tab and the
included text file):
winsockfix
lspfix.zip
If the above file(s) fail to fix your problem, you
may need to do a system restore or a re-install of your Operating
System. See your PC manufacturer for more details.
